Description:
Everyone knows Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto, the so-called Big Three of Piemonte red grapes. But there is a host of lesser known red grape varieties that can be as beguiling, as enthralling, as cerebral, and as useful with food as those three we have come to know and love so well. The first step into this parallel universe existing right under our Piemonte-loving noses is most certainly Grignolino, and rarely have I found a more stunning offering in the category than La Miraja's. This is because winemaker Eugenio Gatti makes Grignolino a point of focus he does not grow Nebbiolo or Dolcetto, only Barbera, the elusive Ruche variety, and Grignolino. That this grape isn't an afterthought shows in the resultant wine: powerful yet delicate at once with lithe acidity, firm, finely grained tannins, and a unique cranberry fruit quality. And while it is quite enjoyable at normal cellar temperature, La Miraja is the rare red that will take a chill nicely. I like to start it off chilled and enjoy it as it comes up to room temp, myself!
