100% Tempranillo. Finca Allende, the estate created by Brother and sister team Mercedes and Miguel Angel de Gregorio, is located in the hill town of Briones in the Rioja Alta. ‘Allende’ can be roughly translated as ‘further’; its philosophy is to go further and further towards creating the perfect Rioja. This has been done by marrying the old and the new, by embracing the traditional grape varieties but then treating them to new French oak. A further distinguishing characteristic, apart from their ripeness and structure, is that Allende’s best wines are vineyard-based, with a focus on the expression of Rioja’s varied terroir. Finca Allende practices sustainable viticulture without the use of harmful pesticides or herbicides. Cultivation is done by hand or with the help of horses. Allende’s commitment is also ethical and the winery supports various projects aimed at helping more disadvantaged groups. The 2015 Mingortiz is pure Tempranillo from an organically farmed vineyard in Briones that gives the wine its name. It was planted in 1964, a south-facing plot with limestone-rich soils at 515 meters altitude that gives the wine length and elegance. It does come in at 15% ABV, but it hides it well. This is a wine for people who like BIG wines!
