Over the years, Malbec has become one of the most active categories in scores of wine shops and restaurants: the full-bodied and fruit-forward examples from Argentina offer generous, crowd-pleasing character of simple, approachable appeal. Few realize, however, that this party-friendly variety actually hails from Southern France in the Cahors region south of Bordeaux. However, in this area, we see a very different expression of Malbec: a brighter, fresher style with more wild, brambly fruit and typically far less oak influence. “Petite Etoile” exhibits this quite clearly with its pleasant cranberry and blueberry interplay and light, leafy freshness. Rather than imparting the vanilla and spice of new oak that is so common in Argentina, Mas de Etoiles ferments in stainless steel with an eye on an energetic and juicy style.
