Burgundy Wines Can Be Both Delicious and Affordable

Mon, May 01, 23

For wine lovers across the world, wines from the Burgundy region, or “Burgundies” as they are more often called, are lauded for being both delicious as well as particularly pricy. Whether you decide to order wine online or drop by your local shop, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a delicious Burgundy without breaking the bank. Learn a bit more about what makes a Burgundy so special and how to find both delicious and affordable options with these tips from the experts at Rollers Wine & Spirits below!

Burgundy Wine 101

As you might expect, Burgundy wine originates from the Burgundy region in eastern France, nestled in the valleys west of the Saône, a tributary of the Rhône River. The beating heart of Burgundy’s wine region is the Côte d’Or which is divided into two distinct parts- the Côte de Nuit known mainly for Pinot Noir and the Côte de Beaune famous for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The Grapes of Burgundy

The most famous wines coming from the Burgundy region are delicious dry red wines produced from pinot noir grapes as well as white wines that are made from Chardonnay grapes. It’s also important to note that wines labeled as Grand or Premier Cru can only be made with these grapes- for example, the region of Chablis is devoted to producing delicious Chardonnays. Other parts of Burgundy employ production using other types of grapes such as Gamay and Aligoté for reds and whites respectively. There are also small amounts of rosé and sparkling wines produced throughout the region as well.

What Makes Burgundies So Special

One of the reasons that Burgundy wines are so special is that the region is often seen as more conscious of environmental factors, or terroir, than all of the other French wine regions. Burgundy also has a higher number of Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOCs) than any other French region, and vineyards are carefully classified based on the specific geography of the area. This method of classifying different wine-producing areas based on geography dates back to medieval times, with the historical involvement of monasteries playing a role in the wine industry development. The wine region of Burgundy is so unique that the region has even been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
